It’s cliché but it’s true
"Work hard and prove to your employer you are a hard worker & they will respect you. Most importantly learn things about yourselves, and enjoy the work!"
We can’t stress enough to do your own research before moving to any area to complete your farm work. I think people just assume that farm work is everywhere and an all-year-round thing, well we did anyway. Certain areas have different fruit depending on the time of year. Make sure to look up things such as reviews, accommodation and if you require a vehicle! We would also recommend you complete your farm work early on, and not last minute before your visa ends. We met many people who were panicking to get work and complete their days in time… that’s some stress we can all do without!
One of the challenges was the weather because if it rains (depending on the work you do) you may not be able to work that day. You obviously have no control over the weather but getting around without a vehicle is another issue. We struggled to be able to go into town for essentials without one. So I would recommend getting a car or at least going somewhere, where one is accessible to you or where you won’t need one. If we were to go back in time we would have purchased a car! The freedom to pick up an extra job over the weekend or simply up and move whenever you’d like seems priceless.
"Another challenge is working for piece-rate! Depending on the work it can be worth it. You can actually earn more than hourly."
Another challenge is working for piece-rate! Depending on the work it can be worth it. You can actually earn more than hourly. But again it can also be terrible! As a traveler, we are all placed into one category; BACKPACKERS. Many locals don’t take “backpackers” seriously and think we just want to party & get our days complete. It can have a negative connotation so it's worth being aware of.
"The cool thing is we have learned things about ourselves, and yes I know it’s cliche but it’s true."
The cool thing is we have learned things about ourselves, and yes I know it’s cliche but it’s true. You learn that you are capable of a lot more than you think. We learned to enjoy the work and power through the tough weather or the aches and pains! You feel quite invincible.
Just remember time flies! People need to complete their days with a goal of either saving money or to just complete their days but work hard and prove to your employer you are a hard worker & they will respect you. Most importantly learn things about yourselves, and enjoy the work!
